Ben Carson, to me, is an anomaly. He is a brilliant neurosurgeon. He has accolades that none of the other candidates have. He is the expert of his field. He is a man of science as a doctor. How can this man of science not see the real effects of climate change? This man has been published and knows what that takes. It's just mind-boggling to me.
In some ways, I feel like he is just pandering. I understand how that may come out as an attack. But to win an election takes a lot of pandering. So I have to credit him for that.
When it comes to medical knowledge, it isn't a contest. But he has not shown that he knows much beyond that. I like him, but he just doesn't carry himself well when he's not in his own medical world.
The Left's Opinion
While I respect Dr. Carson for his distinguished career, I feel his knowledge base and experience is limited in scope. He has an immense amount of experience and wisdom in the field of medicine, some might even call him a subject matter expert. However, how will he handle foreign policy? How will he negotiate a trade deal? How will he fare with broader economic policy?
His expressed views have shown him to be very socially conservative. However, that is just part of the job. He was also unable to answer a simple question on gay marriage without serious clarification. Dr. Carson seems to be a good man and I think he would make an excellent Secretary of Health and Human Services. However, I feel his public service should end there, without further experience in the public sector.
