Without even actively campaigning, he still polls with the best of them. The reason for that is because he is genuine. It seems as if the party is just waiting for the right time.
Here is the thing about Joe Biden, he probably saved the 2012 election with his debate against Paul Ryan. Now, the Republican Party is going to campaign against everything Obama has done. On a debate stage, Joe Biden (if he can collect his thoughts and be focused) can take every talking point and reverse it. Now, that is a tough task. The man has been through something many of us would not be able to handle.
If Joe Biden is able to go through the rigamarole that is a Presidential election he could very well take the "Vice" out of his title.
The Left's Opinion
The current Vice President has a long and 'successful' career in politics. He has been in Washington for a long time, so depending on your definition of success you can interpret that how you like. He is incredibly well liked in DC and has a huge support network across the country. Joe makes a great candidate because he can walk into any city in the country and know hundreds of people he can instantly count on for support. He has the lovable 'Uncle Joe' type personality that attracts people to his cause.
Having said that, Joe Biden is also a walking gaffe machine. He repeatedly sticks his foot in his mouth and often needs to be kept on strict messaging. There was a point during the first Obama term that Republicans were getting campaign ad sound bites on an almost weekly basis. Couple that with his inability to eloquently articulate his party's agenda and you have a very beatable candidate.
